COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – March 1, 2012 – Film and music will have a cosmic impact when the Colorado Springs Philharmonic performs “The Planets” with an accompanying presentation by the Film Studies Program at Colorado College.
The Philharmonic will perform Holst’s “The Planets, Op. 32” Stravinsky’s “Fireworks, Op. 4” and Gandolfi’s “The Garden of Cosmic Speculation, Part 1,” in a concert at 8 p.m., Saturday, March 10, at the Pikes Peak Center, 190 S. Cascade Ave. The performance is part of the Philharmonic’s Vanguard Performances series and is conducted by Thomas Wilson, who is on CC’s music faculty. The Colorado Vocal Arts Ensemble also will perform.
The collaboration between the CC film program and the Colorado Springs Philharmonic began in the summer, when the Philharmonic invited CC artists-in-residence Clay Haskell and Dylan Nelson to explore the possibilities of a creating, with film students, a visual accompaniment for their March 10 performance of Gustav Holst's masterwork, “The Planets.” A seven-movement orchestral suite, “The Planets” runs 52 minutes, so making an accompanying film was no small task.
However, Haskell and Nelson, along with students Kirstie Beard ’12, Brooks Fortune ’12, Arielle Gross ’12, Zach Gulla ’12, Ryan Loeffler ’12 and Meredith Mantik ’11, all whom are English/film track majors, were enthusiastic about project, and worked together to conceive and create the film “Planets.”
In late fall, the students and faculty members presented the president and CEO of Colorado Springs Philharmonic and the conductor with the proposal and accompanying visuals, and were given the go-ahead for the film on the spot.
